Royal served in the United States Navy from March 1941 until he was honorably discharged on November 12, 1946. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor and was very proud to be able to serve our country.

Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Leona Darnell; his children and their spouses, Arvada Darnell and partner, Cheryl Pike; Mazella Gould and husband, Delbert; Curtis Darnell and wife, Kathy; Shannon Darnell and wife, Georgia. Royal has nine grandchildren; Mike Cunningham, Darnell Witt, Stacie Reese, Neal Gould, Lance Darnell, Valerie Darnell, Amber Darnell, Lindsey Darnell and Garrett Darnell. He is also survived by his eleven great-grandchildren; Cressida Fuzie, Peyton Reese, Tanner Reese, Ben Cody Padilla, Dillon Gould, Jesse Gould, Amara Darnell, Kaiya Darnell, Mylah Darnell, Tommy Cunningham and Danny Cunningham.

Royal was a man of many talents of which wood working was one of his loves. He made many wonderful wood crafted items. He also loved archery and hunting.

He was not a man of many words; he loved to read, mainly books on how to do different things. If he wanted to do or make something, he would get the book and figure it out.

He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will be greatly missed.
