Ruth D. Buchholz, 81, Durbin, ND, died in her home on Friday, September 10, 2010.

Ruth was born Feb. 25, 1929, to Herman and Ella (Draeger) Kirmis at the farm house in LaMoure County, at Jud, ND. She was baptized April 21, 1929 at the Lutheran Church the family attended in Jud.

She attended country school by Jud until March of third grade. The school closed and she and her sisters went to school in Jud until Ruth finished fourth grade. Then the family moved to Lisbon, ND. Her father died when she was an eighth grader. She was confirmed at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Lisbon.
She graduated from Lisbon High School in 1946. She attended Valley City State Teacher's College and taught at a country school near Nortonville, ND . She taught grades 1-4 at Goshen Country School District 20. It was there that she met Ernie Buchholz. The couple was married November 14, 1948 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Lisbon, ND.

They made their home on the family farm for over 61 years. Ruth was a member of Goshen Moravian Church. She had a steadfast and abiding faith in the Lord which she passed on to her children. She served in many capacities at church from Sunday School teacher to director of many Christmas programs, giver of children's sermons, and the various committees and boards of the church. She wrote and directed the pageant given for Goshen Church's centennial. She was a member of the ND Watercolor Society.

Ruth enjoyed her children and grandchildren. The family farm was a gathering place for her family. She always kept a vegetable garden out of necessity but really loved her flower gardens. She did a lot of sewing including all of her daughters wedding dresses. For years, she decorated wedding cakes and for even more she decorated birthday cakes. She loved getting
together for watercolor painting sessions with her "painting" pals and grandchildren. Many of her original paintings are hung in her children and grandchildren's homes. She could recite many poems and enjoyed writing them also. She corresponded with many people giving encouragement and understanding. She loved programs, but also delighted in simple things like red delicious apples, pumpkins in the fall, maple leaves, Christmas cookies, sheaves of wheat and family gatherings.

She faced her kidney disease and impending death with the calm assurance and acceptance that the Lord knew what He was doing.
