Sachiko Mizuide Christian, age 84, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 15, 2018. She was born March 1, 1933 in Maebashi-shi, Guma-ken, Japan, to Toraichi and Chika Mizuide.
Sachiko met her husband of 58 years, John Alstone Christian, when he was serving in the United States Air Force in Japan, and they married on July 8, 1959, at the American Embassy in Tokyo. She made a home with him in the United States, where she became a naturalized citizen on May 1, 1963 in Tacoma, Washington. She is survived by her husband John, of Floresville, Texas, and her children, Linda (Ismael) Christian Wiley of San Antonio, Texas, and Robert (Carla) Christian of Yacolt, Washington, 4 grandchildren, 8 step-grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and 3 step-great-grandchildren. She is pre-deceased by her son, Donald Christian, who is survived by his wife, Christina Christian.
As a mother of three young children and living in a new country, her mother-in-law joined their household shortly before her husband was deployed overseas. She was both steadfastly thrifty and deeply generous, and found a way to make an enlisted man's salary feed a family of 6.
Sachiko sacrificed in many ways for others, but never wanted attention for herself. She was the spirit and courage behind others' success. She was reserved and humble, and demonstrated great love in her daily actions. She appreciated the simplest things.
Her children remember her always being there for them, rising early to be sure everyone was taken care of and every evening having a dinner prepared, always without a fuss. She was a talented seamstress and later a small business owner.
A reception will be held on Friday, January 19, 2018, from 10am - 12pm at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, Texas, with a Visitation from 10-11am. A graveside service will be held at Sunset Memorial Park at 12:00 pm. That same afternoon.
