Shirley Jeanne (Powell) Gardner, was born January 9, 1938 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to George Demaree Powell and Kathryn "Lena" (Warnke) Powell. Shirley was the 6th child of seven. In the summer of 1938 the Powell Family moved back to Houston, Texas. Shirley had 1 sister and 5 brothers; Joyce (Powell, Jones) Cox, Sterling Powell, Gerald Powell, Herschel Powell, Wayne Powell and Danny Powell.
Shirley served in the Marines Nurse Corp for a short period of time. After the Marines, she began to work in Hospitals. While working in Methodist Hospital in Houston, TX, she was introduced to Bill Gardner by a mutual friend. On November 15, 1962 Shirley married James William "Bill" Gardner. In 1968 Shirley and Bill moved to Galena Park, TX where she lived till she passed. Shirley and Bill had two children; Cheryl Ann (Gardner, Evans) Christian born October 23, 1967, and David William Gardner born June 23, 1977. Shirley survived Bill's passing on September 6, 1985. While working, Shirley went on to college to get her LVN's license and went to work at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston, Texas until she retired.
Shirley attended church at the First Assembly of God Church in Galena Park, TX. Shirley's family and her church family meant a great deal to her. She had pictures of both throughout her home so that she could see them. Shirley kept everyone in her prayers.
Shirley went to live with the Lord at the age of 80 years 5 days old on January 16, 2018 in her home in Galena Park, Texas. She was survived by 2 brothers Herschel Powell and his wife Rita Powell of Somerville, TN, Danny Powell and his wife Carolyn of Nacogdoches, TX, sister-in-law Mona (Gardner) Kuhn and husband Werner of Galena Park, TX, daughter Cheryl Christian and her husband Christopher of Houston, TX, son David Gardner of Galena Park, TX, 2 grandsons Bo Xander Christian of Austin, TX, and James Cody Evans of Houston, TX, and step-grandson Kyle Christian of Crosby, TX, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Viewing and services will be held at Grand View Funeral Home 8501 Spencer Highway, Pasadena TX. Viewing will be from 9am-10am and services will begin at 10am. She will be laid to rest at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, TX next to her Mother and Father.
