Shirley Potts Hansen
Shirley Potts Hansen, 80, of Midland, Texas passed away on January 2, 2018. A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Ellis Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, January 5, 2018 at 3:00 PM.
Shirley was the eighth child of ten children and was born on the family farm in Hamlin, Texas on April 7, 1937 to Vada Hewett Potts and James Potts. She married John F. Hansen on March 20, 1977. They were married for 22 years at the time of his death in 1999.
Shirley developed her work ethic growing up on the farm. She recounted her days picking cotton, feeding the chickens, slopping the hogs, and pitching in with family chores. Even as an adult, she was never idle and always found something to keep her busy.
During her working career she worked for Union Oil of California and Buckeye, Inc. She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church. After retiring, she was actively involved in many community organizations over the years. She was an M-Squad Ambassador with the Midland Chamber of Commerce, a Pink Lady at the Midland Memorial Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary Department, Midland County Republican Women's Association member, and she volunteered with the Midland Rape Crisis Center and Children's Advocacy Center with her therapy dog, Puddin'.
Shirley was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She could frequently be found in the kitchen cooking for her family. Shirley dreamed of winning the lottery so that she could build a sanctuary for homeless animals. She wanted to find every dog and cat their own loving home. She enjoyed her trips to Las Vegas and took them as often as she could. She loved Merle Haggard, Miller Lite and Kent Kwik Cokes.
Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, John; parents, Vada and James Potts; siblings, Dorrace McCarty, Prentice Potts, Marjorie Neves, Berl Potts, Dwayne Potts and Donnie Potts.
Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children, Lori VanHoozer and husband Stan of Midland; Jay Workman and wife Beth of The Woodlands; Jim Hansen and wife Dixie of Lubbock; grandchildren; Kendra Carreon and husband Jonathan of Round Rock; Courtney Kuykendall and husband Bryan of Midland; Sarah Ascher and husband Jake of Rhome; Mary Katherine Workman of The Woodlands; Matthew Hansen of Corpus Christi; and Elizabeth Hansen of Lubbock; great-grandchildren, Camryn Kuykendall, Jackson and Austin Carreon, and Kira Ascher; siblings, Audie Merle White of Angleton; Earnest "Mickey" Potts of San Antonio; Larry Potts of Colorado Springs, Colorado; her faithful furry companions, Molly and Lucy; and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The Family wishes to thank Dr. Phillip Chae and his staff at Texas Oncology and Home Hospice for their compassion and care of our Mother and Granny.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be directed to Christmas in Action, Home Hospice of Midland or a local no-kill shelter.
