With bright brown eyes and a beautiful smile that lit up her face, Shirley brought a special heartfelt warmth and goodness into the world, which is a little less bright with her passing. Shirley leaves behind her daughter, Pamela L. Carter and her sister, Frances A. Simpson to mourn and cherish her memory along with many friends.

Shirley has now joined her loving husband of 53 years, Phillip G. Carter, and her parents Alfred M. and Irene B. Simpson with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Shirley was born in Lynchburg on April 4, 1937. She spent the early years of her life at Oak Ridge in Lovingston then Amherst, Madison Heights, and the bulk of her years in Lynchburg. Upon completion of her degree at Phillips Business College, she worked for the law firm of Cosby and Phillips, then American Federal Savings & Loan for 16 years. Her last job outside of the home was working in the main office of Heritage High School, where she loved interacting with the students.

Shirley was a longtime member of Randolph Memorial Baptist, where she served as a Deacon for 18 years, a greeter for 20 years, and did hospital ministry for 18 years. Through RMBC, she delivered Meals on Wheels for 22 years. Shirley volunteered for 12 years in the Cardiac Rehab program at LGH, where patients often remarked that they loved seeing her beautiful smile and receiving her encouraging words.

This was a woman who following a major stroke was most concerned about when she could get back to volunteering. She had the heart of a servant, caring and compassionate, to the very end. To know her was to be blessed.

A service celebrating her life will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 19, 2017, at Randolph Memorial Baptist Church with Pastor Derik Hamby officiating.

The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 20, 2017 at Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, please consider the Sanctuary Building Fund at Randolph Memorial Baptist Church, P.O. Box 635, Madison Heights, VA 24572 or Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 1388, Lynchburg, VA.
