Shirley Mae Hiatt Stephens was born April 20, 1931. She was the adopted child of Harry Ray Hiatt and Bertha Hiatt. She lived most of her life in Jackson, Mississippi. She attended school at Poindexter Elementary, Enochs Jr. High and Central High School, Class of 1949.

She attended Millsaps College before her marriage in March of 1953 to Charles Roy Stephens of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She obtained her Associate Degree in Business at Mesa Jr. College in Grand Junction, Colorado, after her divorce from Mr. Stephens in 1960.

She returned to Jackson, Mississippi with her daughter, Charlene Stephens in 1963, at the death of her mother. They lived with Mr. Hiatt for several years while Mrs. Stephens went to school to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked at the University Medical Center.

She later went to work in various fields of office work. At the time of her retirement she was working for the Mississippi State Department of Welfare.

She was very involved in church life. Growing up she attended First Christian Church, and in later years joined Wells United Methodist Church, Southside Assembly of God, St. Therese Catholic Church, and Country Woods Baptist Church.

She was very proud of her grandchildren and of the Wonderful Christian people they turned out to be. Race Robinson (Alyse), Dash Robinson (Emily) and Michele Sanderford.

The last year and a half of her life she was a resident of Willow Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Byram, Mississippi. The family, Don and Charlene Robinson, are very grateful to them for their loving kindness.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 10, 2017 from 4 pm to 6 pm at Lakewood Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 11 am at Lakewood Memorial Park.
