Sonia Cooke, 79, of East Stroudsburg, PA passed away peacefully on Thursday April 28, 2017 at The Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono. She was the loving wife of Mr. Douglas Cooke with whom she shared 38 years.
Born July 24, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Virginia Mae (Smith) Sadler, of East Stroudsburg.
Sonia was a graduate of The East Stroudsburg High School, Class of 1955, where she was also a member of the marching band and Concert band. After high school, Sonia obtained her LPN from the Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. She worked as an LPN for many years before deciding to further her education. Sonia completed her general studies at Northampton Community College and then transferred to Cedar Crest College in Allentown where she obtained her RN BSN. While in college, Sonia worked at Pocono Medical Center. She retired from PMC after 30 years of service. Sonia was a nationally certified trauma nurse who absolutely loved her job. She was so compassionate and caring and took pride in going that extra mile to make her patients most comfortable.
Sonia enjoyed travelling with the love of her life: Doug. Together, they frequented Key West FL and Ocean City MD. Sonia was a hardworking, stubborn, and a very proud Leo. She worked for everything she ever wanted and never let anything get in the way of her ultimate goals. Her eccentric, vivacious, kind spirit will be greatly missed.
In addition to her devoted husband Doug, Sonia had been survived by her daughter: Cheryl Vowcicefski and her husband John, of Stroudsburg; her grandchildren: Rachel Roccanova and her husband Scott, of Norman, OK; John Wyatt, of Stroudsburg; Allison Dumas and her husband Denis, of Washington, DC; and Jamie Vandertoorn and her husband Eric, of Stroudsburg PA.
Friends and family are welcome to gather from 9 - 9:30am for a viewing at The Lanterman and Allen Funeral home Tuesday, May 2, 2017. A graveside prayer service will begin at 10am, in the mausoleum at The Prospect Cemetery.
