Stephen Joseph McCluskey, Jr., 73, a longtime Clinton resident, died Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Hospice Ministries after a short bout with lung cancer. Visitation will be 5-7 PM Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Jackson. Funeral services will be at 10 AM Wednesday, March 12, 2014 in the Funeral Home Chapel with a visitation one hour prior. A graveside service will be 4 PM Wednesday at Oakwood Cemetery in Tunica, MS.

Steve grew up in Robinsonville, MS with his mother Louise and his two sisters. He graduated from Tunica High School and Northwest Junior College in Senatobia. He also attended the University of Memphis, where he met and married Julie Joplin. He was hired by the MS Highway Safety Patrol in 1964 and moved to Jackson in 1965. He was appointed training instructor where he provided field training to the first black patrolman in the state. He also provided patrol security for Lt. Governor Charlie Sullivan and several Miss Mississippi titleholders. He then moved up to Assistant Inspector and later served several years as a criminal investigator. He retired in 1986 with 22 years of service. After retirement, Steve worked for the State Institutions of Higher Learning, setting up and supervising their department of security. He enjoyed wood-working, reading, photography, and attending events of the retired Troopers Association. His greatest joy, however, came from spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Louise McCluskey and his father, Stephen Joseph McCluskey, Sr. He is survived by a son, Stephen Joseph McCluskey, III (Catie); a daughter, Anna McCluskey Anderson (Shane); three grandchildren, Drew McCluskey, Cade McCluskey, and Sydney Landrum; and two sisters, Eileen Kobeck and Evelyn Erwin.

Steve was a loving father and grandfather and will be sorely missed by his family. They wish to thank all hisfriends and former and present patrol officers for their calls, concern, and visits during the last two months.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the MS State Troopers Association, in memory of Stephen J. McCluskey, Jr., P.O. Box 22871, Jackson, MS 39225.
