Steven Roman Martinka was a native Milwaukeean, born at 2520A West Brown Street. He was the son of John and Veronica Martinka and the brother of Andy, Mary, Josephine, and Jean. He attended St. Stevens Elementary School and completed high school through the U.S. Marine Corps. He also studied engineering, food service, and electrical plumbing at MATC. He was proud to have served his country during WWII.

During his working years, he held a variety of jobs which reflected his numerous talents. He was a barber at 28th and Wisconsin Avenue , an engineer at St. Dominic, and a chef at Alioto's in Milwaukee. He once spent a year working in the kitchen on the Queen Mary, during one of its around the world cruises. He loved cooking so much that he opened a restaurant in Mequon, called Martinka's Lounge. Afterwards, he worked for Joe Lehmann Plumbing and Heating at 8501 W. Oakland Avenue. He also managed apartments in Milwaukee, Bayside and Shorewood and worked as a boiler engineer at Mount Mary College on Silver Spring Drive. In his later years, he focused on plumbing, heating and maintenance.

He was married to Barbara Lehmann for more than 20 years and had two daughters: Katie and Veronica.

Throughout the years, Steve's hobbies included gardening, tinkering with mechanical projects and building bird houses. He was also very fond of reading about and discussing World War II. He was very proud of the fact that he built his own house. He enjoyed traveling, especially by automobile and found peace in the beauty of nature.
