Thelma Adeline Yarbrough Boose, a Winston-Salem native, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2017 at the age of 96.Thelma was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her love of gardening was on display every spring as rows of iris adorned the farm on Meadowlark Drive, earning her the nickname "The Iris Lady." Thelma's love for family was evident too. For nearly 40 years, Thelma's family would gather around her at a local restaurant for a 7:30am breakfast every weekend.
Thelma was born December 15, 1920 to the late Flossie Moser Yarbrough and Bolton Henry Yarbrough. She graduated from the Old Town School where she played on the basketball team. On April 12, 1941 she married Russell Elbert Boose. They had four daughters - Sheila Binkley (Charles), Rita Roberson (Bob - deceased), Faye Stout (Raymond), and Sherry Boose. Three grandsons - Chris Binkley of W-S, Steven Stout of Old Town, and Tony Stout of W-S, and four granddaughters - Dawn Wrenn (deceased), Tricia Kurfees (James) of Salisbury, Heather Faircloth (Mitch) of Lewisville, Tammy Roberson, and five great-grandchildren - Haley McBride, Morgan Faircloth, Logan Stout, Serenity Faircloth, and Dylan McBride. Surviving siblings are Melbadean Smith and Wilma Sprinkle.
While Russell worked full time, Thelma focused on raising the children while maintain two large chicken houses from 1956-1965. In her free time, Thelma worked at the family owned "Moravian Cookie Shop." In 1969 Thelma and Russell bought the cookie shop and ran it until 1991. Thelma especially loved her family trips to Cherokee.
Thelma was preceeded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years; Russell, her brother; Ralph Yarbrough, and sister; Josephine Mock.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, October 24 at Olivet Moravian Church at 11am. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
