ROCK HILL Thelma Mary Johnson Sizemore, 96, formerly of Columbia, S.C., died Monday, October 30, 2017 at Wellmore Assisted Living, Tega Cay, S.C.

Born November 13, 1920 in Columbia, S.C., to Jesse Arthur Johnson and Annie Jackson Johnson, Thelma was the second oldest of four sisters (Litia Mae Scott, Ethel "Minerva" McCoy, Jessie "Tency" Grubbs).

Thelma attended Hamrick Elementary (Columbia), Everett Elementary (Winnsboro), Wardlaw Junior High and graduated from Columbia High School. She also graduated from Dickinson’s Secretarial School where she mastered typing, dictation, and shorthand.

After World War II, Thelma married the love of her life, Lucius Henry "L.H." Sizemore on October 29, 1946, in a double ring ceremony with her older sister, Litia and Wayne Scott of Nebraska. They were happily married for 42 years.

Thelma worked at Pacific Mills and GMAC during World War II and for the Internal Revenue Service into the 1950’s until she became a stay-at-home mother to her two sons. She was employed as secretary for Southside Baptist Church, Columbia in the 1970’s where she was a long-time member, Sunday School teacher and an active member of the Women’s Missionary Union.

Thelma was an excellent cook who took great pleasure in preparing meals for family gatherings, church groups and other special events. She was an avid gardener who loved flowers, especially her prized azaleas. She cherished vacations traveling with family (California to see her sister, Hawaii, S.C. beaches, and Blowing Rock, N.C. to name a few). Thelma also enjoyed reading, watching her favorite shows, and taking long walks.

Thelma's greatest accomplishment was that of devoted wife to her late husband, L.H.; loving mother to Richard "Hank" Sizemore of Fort Mill, S.C., and late son, Donald "Don" Forrest Sizemore; adoring grandmother to Marcus and Cliff (wife, Christina) Sizemore of Charleston, S.C.; and caring sister to Minerva of Charlotte, N.C., Tency of Lexington, S.C., and late sister, Litia.

A service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, November 4, 2017, at Dunbar Funeral Home, 3926 Devine Street, Columbia, S.C., with Rev. Becky Shirley officiating. Visitation will be at 1:30 p.m. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Southside Baptist Church, 702 Whaley Street, Columbia, SC, 29201 or to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.
