Thomas Bell Patterson

Thomas Bell Patterson, 76, of Jackson, Mississippi, died Thursday, August 28, 2014, at the Mississippi State Veterans Home. A Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated at 11:00am Tuesday at St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral with internment following in the church columbarium. Visitation will begin at 10:00am Tuesday in St. Francis Hall at St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Patterson was born on July 17, 1938, in Alexandria, Louisiana, to the late Sadie Nichols Patterson and Kotz Alan Patterson, Jr. He graduated from Jackson Central High School in Jackson, Tennessee. He graduated from Auburn University where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. Thomas was active in the Boy Scouts of America throughout his life, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout, and serving in leadership roles on the Andrew Jackson Council.

Mr Patterson moved to Jackson in 1961 where he began his career in the insurance industry. Mr. Patterson married Catherine "Kay" Frances Graves at Calvary Baptist Church in Jackson on August 1, 1964. This year they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Mr. Patterson was the owner of several insurance agencies in Jackson including Thomas Patterson Agency and Wortman and Mann Insurance Agency. Throughout his life he was active in both the Mississippi and Jackson Life Underwriters Associations, serving as president of both and was named MALU Man of the Year. Patterson also achieved the rank of Charter Life Underwriter.

Mr. Patterson was a communicant of St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral, having been confirmed in 1979. Thomas enthusiastically supported St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Jackson, serving as president of the Booster Club for several years. He also enjoyed playing tennis and hunting, especially at the Dugout Hunting Club.

He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Jane Patterson Tonn.

Survivors include wife, Kay Graves Patterson; daughter, Frances Catherine Patterson Croft and her husband, Justin; grandchildren, Justin Benjamin Croft, Jr. and Thomas Graves Croft, all of Jackson.

Survivors also include brother Kotz "Mickey" Alan Patterson, III , and his wife, Margie, of Henderson, Tennessee; brother-in-law Gene Tonn, of Orlando, Florida; sisters-in-law Rebecca Graves Smith, and husband, Jim, of Gulf Shores, Alabama, and Sharon Shanlever Kelley, and husband, Ron, of Scottsboro, Alabama; nieces, Vicki Williams, Susan Tayloe, Alan Patterson, Karen Pratt, Dixie Patterson; nephews, Jay Smith, Frank Smith, Richard Shanlever, Charles Shanlever; and many great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
