Thomas Jay Larsen, 71, of Weirsdale, FL, beloved husband for 40 years of the late Beverly (Stowell) Larsen, died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, (July 1, 2006) in Granby. Born in Bloomfield, son of the late Harry and Mae (Burns) Larsen, he was raised in Bloomfield and Farmington and graduated from Farmington High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 and retired as a Master Chief Petty Officer after 22 years of service. A submariner, Thomas received numerous medals and commendations during his naval career. He was especially proud of the Citation he received from the Secretary of the Navy, for exceptional meritorious service while conducting an exceedingly important and hazardous independent submarine operation while aboard the USS Polack. Thomas served on many nuclear submarines and was stationed at the New London Sub base and at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Following his discharge, Thomas took a position as a consultant with the Essex Corporation, writing manuals on the maintenance and repair of nuclear submarines. During his retirement, Thomas decided to become an entrepreneur and owned and operated several businesses over the years. He and his wife ran the Village Nursery School and Day Care Center in York and Kittery, ME, The Shirt Shack in York, ME and Newington, NH and A Helping Hand, an assisted living facility in Palm Coast, FL. In his spare time, Thomas enjoyed playing golf at area courses and military bases. An energetic man, he enjoyed visiting his relatives and adored his seven grandchildren. He leaves a son, Thomas Jay Larsen, II of Palm Coast, FL; two daughters, Kathleen Wright and her husband Bert of York, ME and Karen Watkins and her husband Preston of Weirsdale, FL; four brothers, Harry J. Larsen and his wife Joyce of Stonington, James Larsen and his wife Ann of Palm Coast, FL, Jay Larsen of Granby and Robert Larsen of Granby; and seven grandchildren, Natasha Larsen, Thomas J. Larsen, III, Lindsey, Amanda and Robert Wright, Tiffany Chapman and Jeremy Larsen. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and William Larsen.
