Thomas M. Gibney, age 73 of Fall River, died Sunday, September 24, 2017 at Country Gardens Health & Rehabilitation Center in Swansea. He was the husband of Christine (Jean) Gibney, to whom he had been married to for 30 years.

Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late Edward "Big Ed" and Margaret "Rita" (Larkin) Gibney. He received his Associates Degree from Bristol Community College, his Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Southeastern Massachusetts University, now UMass Dartmouth, and later earned his Master's Degree in Education from Cambridge College.

Mr. Gibney was employed as a Probation Officer with the State of Massachusetts for nine years in the Taunton courts until his retirement in 2008. Prior to that he worked at the District Attorney's Office in New Bedford as the Assistant Director of the Bristol County Victim/Witness Unit where his duties included the position of Substance Abuse Liaison Officer.

Thomas was a board member of the Corky Row Club and the UMass Dartmouth Alumni Association. He had served on the Board for Steppingstone. He was also a member of the Italian Progressive Club and the Fall River Boys & Girls Club. He was an elected member of the Fall River Public School Committee and served on this Committee for 14 years.

In addition to his wife, Thomas is survived by a daughter Katherine J. Gibney of Fall River; three brothers: Edward "Ted" Gibney of Lakeville, James "Jimmy" Gibney and his wife Catherine of Fall River and John "Jack" Gibney of Fall River; and a sister Marifran Davis of Fall River. He was the brother to the late Joseph "Jay" Gibney. Thomas is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

His family would like to acknowledge the care and comfort given to Thomas at the Country Gardens Health and Rehabilitation Center. The nurses, CNAs, and staff there truly provided a family atmosphere that greatly supported Thomas and his family during this very stressful and difficult time.

His funeral will be held on Friday, September 29, 2017 at 9AM from the Waring-Sullivan Home at Cherry Place 178 Winter St., Fall River followed by his Funeral Mass at 10AM in Holy Rosary Chapel, 120 Beattie St., Fall River. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 4 to 7PM. Memorial contributions in his honor may be made to Compassionate Care Hospice, 100 Myles Standish Blvd., Taunton, MA 02780.
