Tom was born on January 21, 1937 in Benton Harbor, Michigan to Bernice (Stried) Housh and Edward Derrick, Sr. The family moved to Zion, IL where Tom remained for many years. On May 2, 1959 he married the love of his life, Barbara Terrien, in Waukegan, IL. They bought an old farmhouse in Waukegan Township. Together they renovated their forever home and raised four children: Debbie (Jack) Melcher, Carolyn Derrick, Lisa Derrick, and Tom Jr (Susie) Derrick. They were extremely proud of their home and ever growing family which includes nine grandchildren: Amber (Mike) Melcher, Joshua (Natalie) Melcher, Jonathon (Sarah) Melcher, Nina Grimsic, Alysa Grimsic, Breanna Grimsic, Mackenzie (Kurtis) Derrick, Bailey (AJ) Derrick, and Chloe Derrick, as well as their seven great grandchildren: River, Zoe, Veda, and Daria Melcher, Camden Grimsic, Kinsley Crawford, and Layton Fenderson. In his early years, you could find Tom and Barb at the motorcycle races or waterskiing. Tom enjoyed bow hunting with his brother in law, Grant Bleashka, and son, Tom Jr. Tom and Barb liked to make yearly trips to Las Vegas and joked that if they did well, everyone would know because they would fly home first class. They enjoyed camping with family and traveling when they could, especially to warm places and took pleasure in going on cruises. In recent years, you could find him at Casey's Corner tavern having coffee and donuts with friends while playing the slot machines or having family lunches at home on the weekends. Tom worked as a union heavy equipment operator for over 40 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Edwards Derrick Jr. and James Derrick, his wife of 53 years, Barbara, and his daughter, Carolyn.
