Thomas Sykes was a father and grandfather who loved his family dearly. He loved life and helped anyone who needed his help whether it was fundraising; cooking, etc. he was always there for people. He served in the United States Army.
My dad and mom (the late Helen Sykes) were foster parents raising twenty-three children and two adopted children of their own. He was a great provider that took pride in all his children's school activities by bringing his work clothes with him and changing afterwards and going to work or coming from work. He was a professional chef and the 1st black chef to work at the hotel Utah and opening doors for many others.
Dad opened his own restaurant on State Street in Salt Lake City called the Thomas Inn. He also opened a catering business in North Salt Lake called All Foods Catering. This was my first job I had with my dad. It was great to learn about the food business in detail and how it ran. As a small child he used to take me with him to work and buy me lunch on the way and I would sit in his office and eat while he worked. When he finished, we would go home. Dad also developed a program for troubled youth called Project Reality. It is still in operation today. These are just a few of the things Thomas Sykes did in his life.
Thomas Sykes was born in Columbus Mississippi and raised by Emma Sykes Eberhart. He married the love of his life, Helen Coulter Sykes.
We lost our #1 dad, Thomas Sykes on Thursday, June 14th 2016 at 83 years old. He was proceeded in death by his late wife Helen Sykes (August 1990), Emma Eberhart (February 1998).
