Troy Cameron Hayes

April 8, 1996 - December 10, 2017

Troy was an unusually empathetic young man. Despite his strength and size, underneath he was gentle, kind, and had a heart of gold. His ability to connect with all manner of people was unparalleled. He touched everyone he met. Helping others was always his first concern, part of his innate nature.

After graduating from Sunset High School in 2015, Troy began studying Criminal Justice at Western Oregon University in Monmouth in pursuit of his dream of becoming a police officer. He was also working toward a minor in Forensic Anthropology. He was in the midst of his junior year.

One of Troy’s proudest accomplishments was his participation in the Hillsboro Police Cadet Program. All three years of his involvement in the Law Enforcement Challenge, a competition among cadet programs, Troy and his fellow cadets won first place. His experience in the cadet program not only prepared him for his future career as a police officer, but also helped develop his admirable character. His physical strength, empathy, and sense of justice would have made him an officer to whom anyone would turn in their time of need.

Troy’s leisure time activities included weight training, running, playing basketball, skeet and target shooting, listening to country music, pulling pranks, and, of course, spending time with friends and family.

He is survived by his mother, Dianne M. Hayes; father, Robert P. Hayes, MD; sister, Lauren M. Hayes; stepmother, Linda Lorati Barker; stepsiblings, Laura F. Barker and Christopher D. Barker.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29 at the World Forestry Center, 4033 SW Canyon Road across the parking lot from the zoo. His family suggests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in his memory to the Hillsboro Police Cadet Fund, 250 SE Tenth, Hillsboro, OR 97123.
