Vella Jo Martin, 89, passed from this life Monday, July 3, 2017. Jo was born to the late Ross McCann and Della Winfrey McCann on September 24, 1927, in Roxton, Texas. She graduated from Paris High School in 1945, was a member of the Roxton United Methodist Church until 1936 when her family moved to Paris, Texas. She married L.G. Martin (from Tigertown, Texas) in 1946. Jo and L.G. followed the "Magnolia Oil/Mobil Oil" trail (where L.G. was an accountant) from South Texas to Oklahoma to Dallas, settling in their beloved home in Lake Highlands to raise their family, where they lived out the rest of their lives. Jo was a member of the Lake Highlands United Methodist Church and for many years enjoyed the sewing circle, knitting caps and blankets for premature infants. She was an extremely giving person, very private, never ever wanted to be a burden to anyone. While she could, she enjoyed volunteering at the convenience store at the C.C. Young Senior Living Facility. Jo had many passions, the brightest of which was spending time laughing with her family, especially her grandson Andrew, and spoiling Andrew's dog Rolo (whom she called a human), with treats and brushing. Jo's playful nature was contagious. She loved friends and neighbors; garage sales, estate sales, junk stores; the history of The State Fair of Texas, and hearing about her family's visits there; children; collections, of which there were many, ranging from dolls to glassware, to thimbles - enjoying one collection, then storing away and moving on to the next; the beauty of The Sound of Music; the novel and movie of Christy by Catherine Marshall; classic movies; PBS Masterpiece Theatre; Wheel of Fortune; Dancing with the Stars; everything Magnolia Oil and Mobil Oil; and her enduring faith. Jo is survived by her son, Charles David Martin and his wife Lisa of Dallas; her grandson, Andrew Christopher Martin; her brother- and sister-in-law H.V. and Pat Martin; her much-loved niece, Debbie Kamer; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, L.G. Martin; her mother and father, Ross McCann and Della Winfrey McCann; and several brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and cousins. A graveside service only will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 8, 2017 at the Restland Roxton Cemetery located at 8380 FM 38 South, Roxton, TX 75477. Google Maps can be sketchy in the area, so you may follow Google Maps to Roxton, TX, then follow the signs to the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Jo requested donations be made to the Methodist Children's Home, 1111 Herring Avenue, Waco, TX 76708.
