.Velma Jean Fortin (nee HAM) of Chester, passed away on July 23rd a, few days before her 78th birthday, after a short battle with bile duct cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Edwin Fortin. She is survived by her siblings; Mary, Jane, Floraettia and Carroll; her children Wesley, David and Jean; and five grandchildren. Velma's parents were from the area of Poplar Bluff, Missouri and moved to Michigan for her father to work in the auto factories. The family would move back to Missouri where Velma worked with her family on the farm. Velma would eventually move to St. Louis, Missouri and worked for Bell Telephone as a switchboard operator. She met Lester Edwin Fortin and they were married. Velma was a homemaker until the death of her husband in 1990 after which she moved to Murfreesboro, TN and worked at a number of jobs and settled in as an office manager. She retired and eventually moved to Virginia as her health began to fail. She instilled in her children many life lessons such as; self-reliance, the value of hard work, and applying Christian values. A celebration of her life will be at Southwest Church of Christ on Saturday, July 29 at 2:00 PM. Her remains will be interred at the family plot in Stanfield Cemetery in Clarkton, Missouri.
