Veronica Jacqueline Matthews, 73, of Hartford, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at Kettlebrook Care Center in East Windsor. Born on October 9, 1941 in Summerville, SC to the late Oliver and Corrine (Jenkins) Dukes, she came to the Hartford area as a child and has been a longtime member of Metropolitan AME Zion Church in Hartford. She received a Bachelor's degree and Master's degree from Springfield College in Human Services and attended the Wilfred Academy of Cosmetology as well as the Bible Training Institute of the United Holy Church of America. Veronica loved to sing with the Leroy Gospel Choir at her church and served as a steward and past vice-president of the Greater Hartford Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO Union 1716, but her true passion was her family. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, and had a special bond with her nieces that she helped to raise. Her loving nature and care for her family will be dearly missed. She is survived by her daughter Jacqueline McArthur Farmer of Enfield; her son Gregory Lee McArthur of Cheshire; her daughter-in-law Althea McArthur; her brother Oliver Dukes, Jr. and his wife Mary of Lithonia, GA; her sisters Margaret Kapala of West Hartford and Anna Easterling of Bloomfield; her grandchildren Gregory McArthur, Jr., Joshua and Jasmine Farmer, Marcella McArthur, Helen, Allegra and Donald Matthews; her great-grandchildren Averyannah and Eriel Jones-McArthur and Jordan Farmer; her stepson Arthur "Butch" Matthews, Jr.; a special family friend Riberia Jones; a special friend Eddie Figueroa; and many loving nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her grandson Zachary McArthur, her brothers Charles and Daniel Dukes, and her sister Betty Ann Dukes. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 AM Monday, December 16th at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave Windsor. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10 AM to 11:30 AM. Memorial donations in Veronica's name may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, CT Chapter 2075 Silas Deane Hwy, Suite 100, Rocky Hill, CT 06067.
