Viola was born to Ida Mae Jackson and Nathaniel Abraham on September 24, 1918 in Ida, Louisiana.
In the 1940's she relocated to Vanport near Portland, OR with her family and worked in the ship yards. Later she worked several jobs including housekeeper from which she retired in the 1990's. In 1964, Viola married Mitchell Horsley. Viola was known for her provocative conversation, great sense of humor, eagerness to share her wisdom and master baking skills. On Saturdays she was known to be doing what she loved best, trying out new recipes and fine-tuning her already exceptional cake and pie making. Viola served on several church boards and ministries, including the Mother's Board. In the community she served as the OES Grand Worthy Matron of the MW St. Joseph Grand Lodge, Mt. Olive Grand Chapter.
Viola's greatest joy was spending time with family, especially the younger children. She enjoyed their energy and watching them dance.
Viola began her walk with the Lord early in life and kept her belief in God until she was called home on July 19th, 2017. Viola was preceded in death by her mother, Ida Mae Nelson; father, Nathaniel Abraham; step-father, Spencer Patterson; Son, Roy Nelson; son, Cleveland Nelson; and daughters Lorene Parker, Gloria Hall, Lizzie Smith and Ika Edwards.
