Viola (Vi) Mershon was born December 20, 1928 to Marion J. Richards and John W. Heard in Orenco, Oregon. She died on April 15, 2014 at her home in Corbett, Oregon surrounded by her family.

Viola attended Lincoln High School in Portland and married George W. Mershon on October 9, 1949. In 1957, George and Viola moved to Corbett where they resided in the same home for 57 years. In 1967, George and Viola bought the Corbett Hardware Store, which Viola operated until retiring in 1991.

Viola loved to read mysteries and play Pinochle. She had a competitive spirit and hated to lose. Partial to Martha Washington geraniums, Viola enjoyed baskets of flowers in her yard during the summertime. Viola liked to sew and made clothes for her children and grandchildren as well as their dolls. Ever the perfectionist, Viola kept her seam-ripper at the ready. Both George and Viola loved to dance and met at a New Year's Eve dance in 1948. One of Viola's favorite songs to dance to was The Tennessee Waltz, and for a number of years George and Viola square danced with The Rompin' Stompers. In their retirement years, George and Viola enjoyed traveling throughout the United States in their RV.

More than anything, Viola loved her family. She had a nurturing heart and always put her family first. In addition to George, her husband of 64 years, Viola is survived by four children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren as well as one brother and two sisters.

A private remembrance will be held at a later date.
