Virgil Lee Thompson Sr., 81, of Amarillo died Saturday, October 21, 2017. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 25, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 I-40 East. Funeral services will be Thursday, October 26, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in The Chapel of Memories at Memorial Park Funeral Home with Flex Ovalle officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Virgil was born June 19, 1936 in Donley County to J.P. and Nettie Thompson. He attended Cal Farley's Boys Ranch as a young man. Virgil served in The United States Marines in the Artillery Division during The Korean Conflict. He was a long haul truck driver for 25 years; before retiring from Pantex after 25 years. Virgil loved drinking coffee with friends, John Wayne, bull riding, livestock shows, and most of all his beloved dogs. He was known to be very social and the most awesome "Tata". Virgil loved all his family, especially his grandchildren and will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include sons, Walter Thompson Sr.; Virgil Thompson Jr. and (wife) Tammy; William Thompson and (wife) Candice; daughters, Catherine Alderson and (husband) Aubrey; Sharon Thompson-Pena and (husband) Joe; 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers the family request donations to Cal Farley's Boys Ranch.
