High Point- Virgil Volney Horney III passed away peacefully in his sleep early Saturday morning, May 20, 2017.

Virgil was born in High Point on October 8, 1946 and lived in the city for most of his life. He graduated from High Point Central High School in 1965, Guilford College in 1969, and Wake Forest University Law School in 1973. Virgil was a lifelong member of the Deep River Friends Meeting. He occasionally practiced law and owned and operated Horney's Hollow Herb and Plant Farm on Penny Road with his father, Volney, for many years.

In his youth, Virgil was an avid Boy Scout, played the trombone in the band, and was on the football team. One of his greatest interests was history, especially folkways and traditional skills, and he participated in local area fairs by setting up an antique cider mill and making fresh apple cider. Virgil was also a member of a Scottish Folk Dancing group for many years. Among his greatest loves were his Irish setters.

Virgil was predeceased by his parents, Virgil Volney Horney II and Louise Stevenson Horney, and is survived by his wife, Karen Raley, his aunt Peggy Kimsey, his cousin Mary Lane, all of High Point, and his cousin Craig Kimsey of Greensboro.

A funeral service will be held at Sechrest Funeral Service, 1301 E. Lexington, High Point, at 2 PM on Thursday, May 25, 2017. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial is private. Donations in lieu of flowers to honor Virgil may be made to the Boy Scouts of America at 1325 West Walnut Hill Lane, Irving Texas 75015-2079.
