Dr. Virgilio R. “Pexy” Carangal passed away on November 26 at his home in Corvallis, Oregon. He was 84. He was a 1955 graduate of University of the Philippine College of Agriculture. He proceeded to complete his MS degree at Purdue University in 1958 and PhD degree at University of Minnesota in 1966. His focus was Plant Breeding and Genetics. He was a 1973 TOYM (Ten Outstanding Young Men) awardee in Philippines for being the “Heart and Brains” of the Masagana ‘99 program. He joined the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in 1974 to launch and coordinate the Asian Cropping Systems Network (ACSN). During his 20 years at IRRI, he was a dedicated agronomist and respected by many research collaborators in South and Southeast Asia. He raised substantial research funds and traveled extensively to monitor collaborative projects. He authored/co-authored numerous scientific papers on cropping and farming systems during the 1976-96 period. He was preceded in death by his “honey” wife, Connie. He was a beloved dad to Aimee(Tirtha) Dhakhwa, Aileen Carney and Eugene(May). In his later years, he was a proud grandpa to Geoffrey and Stephanie Carney and Dylan, Malia, Kai and Jase Dhakhwa. He was a dear brother to Maria Luz, Florentina Gutierrez, Rosalia, Luzviminda, and Teodoro(Rita) and the late Apolinario Jr., Amparo de la Rosa and Reynalda Ramos. He has many relatives and friends who love him dearly and remember him fondly. His wake will be held at the Zimmerman & Sandeman Funeral Home in Oak Lawn, Illinois on Sunday, December 10th starting from 2-8 pm. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am on December 11th at St. Terrence Parish, in Alsip, Illinois with interment at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery in Alsip.
