DALTON, Virginia Lewis, of Richmond and Culpeper, widow of Lewis N. Dalton, died October 22, 2017, at Johnston-Willis Hospital. She was born January 22, 1919 in Culpeper County to John Merry Lewis and Martha "Pattie" Griffin Lewis. Mrs. Dalton was a retired educator, having taught 18 years in the public schools of Culpeper County. She also served 22 years as Director of Instructional Services for the Virginia Education Association. Mrs. Dalton was a graduate of Mary Washington College, now University of Mary Washington, and received her master's degree at the University of Virginia. She was elected to membership in Delta Kappa Gamma and Kappa Delta Pi. Mrs. Dalton was past president of the Virginia Education Association. She was a professional Registered Parliamentarian and served in this capacity for many state and national organizations. She was a charter member and past president of the Richmond Parliamentary Law Unit, which was recently renamed in her honor. She was a charter member and past president of the Salem Garden Club in Culpeper County. Mrs. Dalton was a member of Bon Air Baptist Church in Chesterfield County.
Mrs. Dalton was a member of the Board of Visitors of Mary Washington College for eight years and Rector of the Board for two years. She was a member of the UMW Foundation Board, the Heritage Society and the Presidents' Council. The university honored her with their annual Distinguished Service Award in 1996.
The General Assembly of Virginia passed a resolution in 1996, commending Mrs. Dalton for her contribution to education in Virginia.
In 2005, she was named the UMW Distinguished Alumnus of the year.
For the past nine years, she had lived at Spring Arbor of Salisbury Assisted Living, where she was loved by staff and fellow residents. Her sweet nature, sense of humor, and her desire to remain independent made her a joy to be around. She will be remembered for her graciousness, her strength of character, and willingness to accept whatever life placed in front of her.
Mrs. Dalton is survived by her two stepchildren, Dr. John C. Dalton (Lillian) of Atlanta, Ga. and Mrs. Jill Dalton Johnson of Richmond; niece, Mrs. Linda Poulin of Augusta, Maine; five stepgrandchildren, Dr. Stephen Dalton, Dr. Irene Dalton, David Dalton Johnson, Mary Vann White, Matthew Johnson; and two great-nieces. She was predeceased by a sister, Gertrude D. Lewis; and brothers, Russell H. Lewis and John M. Lewis Jr.
She is also survived by dear friends, David L. Johnson and Janis, who are the parents of her godchild, Slad J. Gormus and grandparents of her namesake, Dalton Grace Gormus.
Funeral services will be held at Woody's Funeral Home, with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Richmond, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Mary Washington College 1940 Scholarship Fund, 1302 College Ave., Fredericksburg, Va. 22401. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
