Virginia Mae (Russell) Dorn, 91, of Hartford and formerly of Vernon, wife of the late Rev. William Van Buren Dorn, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 16, 2013, at Avery Heights Nursing Home in Hartford. Born in Hinsdale, Illinois, the daughter of the late Samuel and Esther (Anderson) Russell, she grew up in Illinois and lived in the Midwest before moving to Suffield in 1969. Virginia lived in Vernon for twenty-one years before moving to Avery Heights in 2000. She was a graduate of the University of Illinois, Class of 1944, where she earned her undergraduate degree in home economics. Virginia was employed as a social worker for the State of Connecticut for several years before her retirement in 1984. She enjoyed gardening, and was a hospice volunteer. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend who enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Virginia was a member of Ellington Congregational Church. She is survived by her sons, Christopher Dorn and his wife Eileen of Chicago, IL, William Dorn and his wife Jo-Ann of Manchester, and Timothy Dorn and his wife Laurie of Avon; seven granddaughters, Margaret, Kristina, Selena, Livia, Brittany, Rebecca and Katherine; eight great grandchildren; two sisters, Rosemary Bischoff of Denver, CO, and Ruth Olson of Pensacola, FL, and many nieces and nephews. Virginia was also predeceased by her son, David Dorn (2009). Her family would like to extend a special "thank you" to all of the staff at Avery Heights for the wonderful care that they gave to Virginia while she resided there. Her family will receive friends for calling hours on Sunday, December 22, 2013 from 2 – 4 p.m. at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral home, 551 Talcottville Road (Route 83), Vernon. Funeral services will be celebrated on Monday, December 23rd at 11 a.m. at the Ellington Congregational Church, 72 Main Street, Ellington. Burial will be in West Suffield Cemetery in the spring.
