Wakefield Scott Moller Stornetta died peacefully at home in Annapolis, Maryland on December 9, 2017 surrounded by family. He was born in Oakland, California, April 2,1929. He graduated from Santa Maria High School. At the U.S. Naval Academy, he was a member of the Drum and Bugle Corps and was commissioned Ensign with the class of 1951. He subsequently attended the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School and the U.S. Naval War College and received a Masters in Science in International Affairs from George Washington University in 1965.



He married Mary Alberta Shelton at Haygood United Methodist Church in Princess Anne County (now Virginia Beach), Virginia on June 27, 1953.



He served in various positions throughout a twenty-year career in the United States Navy, including piloting the P5M in ASW squadrons VP 44 and VP 24 during the Cold War, and as Bureau of Weapons Representative at the Martin Company during the termination of the experimental Seamaster jet seaplane. He was assigned to Second Fleet Staff aboard the U.S.S. Newport News on its NATO tour in northern Europe and during the Cuban missile quarantine and the inspection of the Russian ship Labinsk. Wake also completed a tour of duty in Vietnam as rules of air engagement officer on MACV staff from 1967-68, for which he received several awards including the Bronze Star. He returned to the United States Naval Academy as an instructor in the Engineering Department.



After retiring from the Navy in 1971, Wake began a thirty-year second career as a Certified Financial Planner, advising school teachers of Anne Arundel County.



Wake was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Arnold, MD where he served as treasurer for many years and was a member of the the bell choir. He served variously as treasurer or president of many community organizations including the Chase Creek Swim Club and Winchester-on-the-Severn Community Association. He was active in the Naval Academy Alumni Association and was also an avid golfer (primarily with the Naval Academy Golf Association) as well as sailing and racing boats with family and friends.



He is survived by Alberta Stornetta, his wife of 64 years, two daughters, Ruth Lynn Stornetta, Charlottesville, Virginia, Mary Elizabeth (Beth) Gale, Falmouth, Massachusetts, and two sons, Wakefield Scott Stornetta, Jr., Morristown, NJ, and David Walter Stornetta, Arnold, Maryland. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Alberta IV Stornetta. He also is blessed with five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren who carry on his memory.



A memorial service will be held at Asbury United Methodist Church 78 Church Rd, Arnold, MD 21012 on Sunday January 14, 2018 at 2 PM. Interment of cremains will immediately follow in the Church Cemetery.
