Walter Kirkman of Riverside passed away on June 12, 2017, at the age of 90. Born in 1927 in New York City, he earned a Bachelor's Degree from Columbia College and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. Walter and Andrea Kieffer were married in 1956, and they had three children. Walter was a devoted family man, a loving husband to his wife, who ensured that his children were imbued with a sense of purpose, an appreciation of education and the arts and the importance of things larger than life. His undergraduate education was temporarily interrupted by service in the US Navy at the end of World War II and subsequently he served as a Lieutenant in the US Army Reserve. Walter was a believer in the greatness of this country and its institutions and his service was always a source of great honor and pride for him.

Walter's professional career was highlighted by his position as a Vice President and Marketing Executive for Chase Bank and American Airlines and subsequently his career evolved into the marketing of financial services for companies such as Ernst & Young. He was passionate about the outdoors and spent many holidays skiing, hiking, fishing and hunting with family and friends. An expert skier, even into his late 70s Walter could be found teaching his grandchildren to ski and appreciate nature and skiing down the mountains of New England with them. After retiring, Walter's love for the outdoors expressed itself in a dedication to conservation and he worked with Trout Unlimited to develop and advance efforts in trout restocking techniques and education. He was also a great supporter of the unique alignment between hunters and environmentalists to protect green spaces. A major hobby of Walter's was studying and growing a wide variety of orchids and the family was always thrilled upon seeing the array of beautiful orchids flourishing under his care.

Walter is survived by his wife of 60 years, Andrea; son, Thomas and his wife Yi Liu of San Francisco; daughters, Karyn and her husband Christopher Lanzano of Fairfield, CT and Kimberly and her husband Lourens van Niekerk of Pretoria, South Africa; and five grandchildren: Alexander, Gerard, Stefan, Natasha and Nikolai.

Walter's family will receive friends on Sunday, June 18, from 3-7 p.m. at the Leo Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch Street, Greenwich, CT.
