Walter Laverty, 89, beloved husband, father and grandfather ended his visit here on earth and has gone on his way to heaven to be with our Heavenly Father on Friday, October 6, 2017. Born March 28, 1928 in Clifton Heights, Pennsylvania, he was a devoted husband to Carolyn for more than 65 years before her passing in 2014. He was also a father to eight children, two of whom preceded him in death, Debra and John. He is survived by six children; Sons David, Michael, Patrick, Mark and daughters Sheila, Mary and their loving spouses. He had nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. A US Army veteran of 30 years, Command Sergeant Major Laverty served in Korea where he was awarded the Bronze Star "V" for his efforts in the Battle of Pork Chop Hill. He later served in Vietnam with the 1st Infantry Division (Big Red One) where he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Medal of Valor, and 2 Bronze Stars for Valor. His helicopter was shot down during the Tet Offensive, 1968, and he valiantly escaped enemy capture. His other overseas assignments included Italy, Austria, and West Germany. Moving to Central Florida in 1976, he lived a leisurely life and was an avid golfer with 3 holes-in-one to his credit. A Past Lecturing Knight, BPOE, Lodge #1830 in Winter Park, he volunteered for many activities at the lodge. Visitation for family and friends will be held Tuesday, October 10th from 5-7 PM at the Baldwin-Fairchild Goldenrod/Aloma Chapel (www.baldwinfairchild.com). A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, October 11th at 9:30 AM at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Winter Park. He will be interred at a later date.
