Walter Lee Bishop of Columbus, Georgia passed away peacefully at his home in Avondale Estates, Georgia, on December 22 surrounded by a loving family.

Funeral service will be on Saturday, January 3, 2014 at 3:00 pm in the Edgewood Hall at Striffler-Hamby, 4071 Macon Rd, Columbus, Georgia 31907.Burial will follow in Parkhill Cemetery. Family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:30 until 3:00 pm.

Born January 30, 1923 in Columbus, Georgia, Walter spent his entire life in the service of his country, his community and his family. Enlisting in the US Navy in 1942, Walter served aboard LST 309 and fought in the invasions of Sicily, Anzio Beach and the second assault wave on Omaha Beach in the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. Staying in the Navy after World War II, Walter again fought in Korea in the invasion at Inchon. Upon his discharge from the Navy, Walter joined the Columbus Fire Department in 1952, rising to the rank of Battalion Chief. In 1985 following 33 years of dedicated and faithful service to the citizens of Columbus, Walter retired from the fire department and spent the remainder of his years pursuing a passionate love of golf, the Atlanta Braves and traveling to visit friends and family.

Throughout his life, Walter was a kind, gentle and loving man who always strove to do good and serve his fellow man. Walter was always first to offer a helping hand to those in need. Walter is survived by his loving wife of sixty five years, Dorothy Broughton Bishop and daughters, Lin Inlow and Donna Ciccolella, sons-in-law, Charles Ciccolella and George Inlow, grandchildren Connie Ciccolella and Emily Inlow-Hood, great grandchildren, Bryce Bishop DeAtley and Malcolm Lee Hood, Patsy Martin, his cousin and many loving nieces and nephews. Many of Walter's friends and family have preceded him in death but he will be greatly missed by all who remain. Rest In Peace.
