Upon graduation from high school, he volunteered to serve his country in WWII at age 17. He was a Petty Officer First Class hospital corpsman on Okinawa. On the GI bill, he studied at SMU and at the University of Tennessee, ultimately becoming a medical doctor specializing in psychiatry. Much of his work focused on medical education, the treatment of veterans and others profoundly affected by war and tragedy. He practiced in Topeka, KS and Amarillo, TX.

Dr. Salmon was preceded in death by his wife Barbara, the love of his life, in 1992. He is survived by his sister Grace Salmon of Amarillo, TX, daughter Amelia McKinley of Weatherford, TX (husband Robert), and son Thomas Salmon of Coppell, TX (wife Noelle). Grandchildren are Kaitlyn McKinley, Ian McKinley and Dane Salmon. He had a special place in his heart for several nieces, nephews and dear friends who will also miss him.
