Dutch Simmons passed away peacefully early Monday morning, August 21, 2017 at the Sunnyside Health Care Center.

He was born in Harrisonburg on October 13, 1926 and was the son of the late E. Franklin and Rebecca Wealthy Simmons.

Dutch graduated from Harrisonburg High School and is a proud member of the HHS Hall of Fame for his football prowess. He, along with Jack Fravel, coached Midget League football for many years. He was employed for 36 years by the US Postal Service, where he held many positions and retired as the Postmaster of Bridgewater.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Joseph Simmons. They spent 67 wonderful years together before her death on July 14, 2014. Also preceding him in death were his three brothers, Lawrence, Carostee and Weldon; his sister, Evelyn Simmons Sam.

He served as an Army Air Force aviation cadet in WWII and retired after 20 years in the National Guard. He also spent eight years in the Virginia State Guard.

Dutch was a lifelong member of Harrisonburg Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and 35 years as the Sunday school secretary. He was also a member of the Harrisonburg Elks Lodge #450.

He is survived by his son, Dennis Simmons and wife, Judy Ritchie Simmons, of Harrisonburg; his daughter, Gail Simmons Harrison and husband, David, of Harrisonburg; two grandchildren, Jonathan Harrison and wife, Gwynn of Harrisonburg, Julie Harrison of Whittier, NC; his two great-grandsons, William and Jake Harrison who were the light of his life; his brother-in-law, Duane Sam; and also numerous nieces and nephews who he cherished.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Sunnyside and all the wonderful staff on third floor health care for their tireless efforts to make his time there more comfortable.

Visitation will be 6:30-8:00 pm, Thursday evening, August 24, 2017, at Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.

A memorial service will be held at Harrisonburg Baptist Church, Friday, August 25, 2017 at 2:00 pm, with Dr. Mark D. White officiating, a reception will follow. A graveside service will be private.
