Wilbur "Gene" Wendel, 81, passed away Saturday, June 11, 2016 at his home in Fort Wayne. Born in South Whitley, Gene graduated from South Whitley High School in 1952 and was a star basketball player during his school days. Gene owned several businesses in his lifetime, including the Aboite Inn in Roanoke, IN, Wawasee Motel in Syracuse, IN and a full service gas station and car wash. He was an honest man, with great integrity and a quick sense of humor. Surviving are his loving wife, Rose Wendel of Fort Wayne; sons, John (Penny) Wendel of Manhattan Beach, CA, Robert Wendel of Denver, CO, James (Linda Eloph) White of Fort Wayne; daughter, Tammy Clarke of St. Petersburg, FL; sisters, Julia Brock, Donna Thomson, and Carolyn Augustine; grandchildren, Ryan, Dana, Amber, Lindsay, Jarred, China, Jasz, and Nikole; and great grandchildren, Jaydyn, Owen, Amelia, and Willow. Gene was preceded in death by his parents Carl Fred and Gladys Delight Wendel; sisters, Arema McGlennen and Erma Rosalie Kreider; and granddaughter, Parke White. A time of gathering will be Thursday, July 14, 2016 from 5 to 7 PM at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 6750 Covington Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46804. Private burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Preferred memorial may be made to Visiting Nurse or Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana.
