The Joyful Journey of Wilfred Owen Allen

Wilfred was the first of four children born to Clarence and Mabel Davis Allen. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on June 12, 1931. Following his mother's death, his Aunt Hazel gained legal custody and raised and nurtured him as her own and he accepted and loved her as if she were his mother.

Wilfred was baptized in St. Augustine Episcopal Church he served as an acolyte and attended Galveston's public schools until age sixteen. At this young age he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and later reenlisted with the Air Force. He worked for the federal government until his retirement after 30 years of service. While stationed at Ellington Air Force Base Wilfred was briefly married and his first child, the pride of his life was born, Rose Marie Allen.

Wilfred enrolled at Texas Southern University where he met Evelyn Delores Edmond and immediately fell in love. After a year he finally persuaded her to marry him on September 28, 1957, and to this marriage she presented him with three wonderful and beautiful children that have grown up to make him proud and his life full and complete. Wilfred and Evelyn also raised their infant granddaughter Juanita Marie Allen until about the age 16. They shared a love of traveling and toured Europe, North Africa, East and West Caribbean, Belize, Mexico, France and Spain.

Wilfred was an active member of The Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Texas & Associates, Prince Hall Affiliation beginning in 1958. He received his Associate in Science degree from Northern Virginia Community College on June 15, 1976. Wilfred has authored one book "A Better You". He was a founding member of the Wilfred O. Allen Education Foundation a 501(c)(3) organization with the goal to provide college scholarships for minority Houston Area youth.

Wilfred is survived by his beloved wife Evelyn of 60 years and children: Rose Marie Whitney, Cheryl Allen, Michelle Brown (Winthrop), Damon Allen (Anitra); grandchildren: Yetunde James (Jason), Juanita Marie and Malik Allen, Gregory and Wesley Brown, Immanuel, Avi and Sofia Allen; and Great-grandson: Elijah J. Baltazar; sister, Joan Allen Williams and brother, Leon Phillips, Jr.; sisters-in-law Carrie "Jean" Adams and Patricia Bell; brother-in-law, Fredrick Edmond and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
