William “Bill” R. Terry


Bill Terry, 88, of Laurie, MO passed away Friday, December 29, 2017. Memorial service will be 2:00pm Saturday, January 6, 2018 with visitation from 1-2pm at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 West, Columbia, MO.

Bill was born to Ray and Faye Terry on March 2, 1929 in Van Buren, MO and grew up on the Current River enjoying boating, swimming, and fishing. He graduated from Hickman High School in 1947 and joined the Air Force in 1948; he was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. He flew missions over Korea and Indo China as flight engineer on the Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar.

He married Elaine Gessling from Forest Green in 1956, she preceded him in death. Bill owned his own business selling frozen meats to restaurants and groceries. After retiring from the road, he went to work for Gerbes supermarket as Produce and Beverage Manager retiring in 1991. He grew Christmas trees on his farm in Columbia, selling trees to Nowel’s and Wilson’s but most people remember going to his farm, cutting their tree and stopping by the Barn to warm up by the stove and enjoy some Christmas Cheer!

In 1988, he married Ada Duve of Columbia, she survives. They moved to their dream lake house in Sunrise Beach in 1996. Bill was an avid wood worker; making two wooden boats -one the Ada Belle and many ship’s wheel clocks for special friends.

He enjoyed life - cooking, fishing, boat rides, country music jams, dancing and telling stories of past days while serving his personal elixir Tawny Port. He enjoyed traveling in his motorhome; crossing the country many times and traveling abroad.

He was a member of the Elks, American Legion, Trinity Lutheran Church Columbia, and Kent Memorial Lutheran Church Sunrise Beach.

Bill is survived by his wife, Ada; sister, Carol (Lloyd) Allen of Portland, TN; five children, John (Carol) Duve of La Jolla, CA, Carolyn (Scott) Christensen of Sioux Falls, SD, Tom (Donna) Duve of Columbia, MO, Jayne (Chris) Buttner of Albuquerque, NM, Mark (Fawn) Duve of St. Louis, MO; six grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law Gladys Thompson and niece Lisa.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Kent Memorial Lutheran Church Sunrise Beach, Parkinson’s Foundation, and Trees for Troops.
