William Vestal "Bill" Smith peacefully passed away at home surrounded by his loving family and friends on Sunday, January 14, 2018, one week past his 90th birthday. Born on January 7, 1928, Bill was blessed with 90 wonderful years of loving and providing for his family and faithfully serving and supporting First United Methodist Church. Those closest to him knew until his last hours, he was constantly working on big plans, projects and where he was going next.
Bill spent the bulk of his career in the poultry industry beginning with Smith Hatchery followed by Paramount Poultry and Cargill, Inc. Following a short retirement, Bill worked with Allen's, Hudson Foods, Tyson, GoldKist and Pilgrim's Pride. He was responsible for introducing one of the first climate controlled swine facilities in North Carolina, Carolina Swine Producers. Bill also founded Willie's Antiques which provided much enjoyment the past fifteen years.
Bill was a veteran of the Korean War, a member and Master Mason of Liberty Masonic Lodge #714 AF&AM, and the American Legion. For years, Bill served on several boards including Liberty Savings and Loan, First National Bank and the NC Poultry Association.
As an active land developer, Bill spent years developing acres of real estate and farm properties for himself and others. Bill's strong work ethics were second to none but he did love a good game of golf with his special buddies and treasured the special times with his daughters and grandchildren.
Survivors include daughters Lyn Smith Richardson (Jeff) and Kim Smith Griffin (Keith); grandchildren: Justin Richardson (Julie) and Taylor Griffin, all of Liberty, NC; step grandchild Mandy Griffin (Chloe, Carson) of Sanford, NC; a special great granddaughter Charlotte Rilyn Richardson and a great grandson arriving in March (William Rhett Richardson) of Liberty, NC. Also surviving are brother Alford Brower Smith of Ramseur, NC and sisters Anne Smith Caviness (Junior) of Liberty and Betty Smith Faulkner (Bobby) of Winston Salem, NC along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Bill was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Patsy Staley Smith and his parents, Robert Glenn Smith and Floy Vestal Smith and his brothers, Robert Glenn (Buck) Smith, John Franklin Smith, Walter Jack Smith and sister Ruth Smith Foster.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 20, 2018 at First United Methodist Church, Liberty, NC, with Reverend Lisa Tanico officiating. Visitation will be Friday, January 19 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, NC.
The family would like to thank special caregivers Mary Stephens, Terese Denton, Marie Toomes and Elvino Henderson and the nursing staff of Hospice of Randolph.
