Winifred Young Welch, age 74, of Fall River passed in Southpointe Rehabilitation and Skilled Care, with her brother by her side.

She is the daughter of the late J. Joseph (Joe) and Claire (Murphy) Welch. She maintained a lifelong connection to Fall River while residing in Ipswich, Wenham, Cambridge and Somerville, Massachusetts. She was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy, class of 1960. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Literature from Emmanuel College and a Masters in Literature from Boston College. Winifred was a Sister in the Order of the Sisters of Notre Dame De Namur for thirty years, leaving the order in 1994. During her tenure, she was an instructor at Boston University for five years.

Winifred was active in supporting the Order of Notre Dame. She wrote poetry and liturgy for Catholic services. She was a student of the Nazi persecution of minorities and members of the Jewish faith during World War II and had made significant progress towards obtaining a PhD focused on the events surrounding the holocaust.

She is survived by a brother, James J. Welch and his wife Marguerite of Reston, VA.

Her Funeral Mass will be held Friday, May 26, 2017 at 10:30AM in St. Mary's Cathedral, Spring Street, Fall River, MA 02721. Visitation will be Friday from 8:45 to 10:00AM in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Cherry Place, 178 Winter Street, Fall River. Burial in St. Patrick's Cemetery, 2233 Robeson Street, Fall River, MA 02720.
