Winton Canfield was truly a man from the "greatest generation". He was born on April 16, 1921 to George T. and Millie Harris Canfield in Beaumont, Kansas. He graduated from high school in Lockwood, Missouri, then moved to Houston where he met and married his wife, Ruby Graff Canfield, and began his career with Western Electric, a division of AT&T. Winton put his career on hold in 1942 to proudly serve his country in the U. S. Navy aboard the DE USS McCook as a radio technician from 1942 - 1945. He radioed the battle results from the Normandy beaches on D-Day to Allied Headquarters in England. After the war, he returned to AT&T as a telephone technician for a total of 42 years, before retiring. He and Ruby then moved to Nacogdoches to be nearer their children and grandchildren. Winton loved to entertain family and friends with magic tricks and stories from the "good old days". His grandsons and great-grandchildren were the light of his life, and they are blessed to have learned so much from him. During his retirement, Winton delved into computers and genealogy. He also wrote several books recounting his childhood and war years. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church.

Winton is survived by his wife of 75 years, Ruby; son, Ron Canfield and wife, Sarah; daughter, Julie Davis and husband, Don; grandsons and great-grandchildren, Paul Davis and daughter, Jolee; Mike Canfield; Seth Canfield and wife, Kellie and daughters, Alexis and Ashley; Jonathan Canfield and wife, Becca and sons, Andrew and Luke; sister-in-law, Lillis Gregory, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, and his brother, Earl M. Canfield. The family would like to thank the Arbor and Life Care Hospice, especially Angie and Stephanie, for their loving care of Winton. Memorial Contributions may be offered to a charity of your choice.
