Liu, Yumin (1929-2018) born in June 19, 1929, graduated from Department of Geography, Sun Yat-sen University in 1953 and later completed his master's degree in the Soil Science Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences. After graduation and for the next 40 years, he successfully served as a professor, an advisor of graduate students and environmental scientist in Department of Geography and Department of Environmental Science in Nanjing University. He also served as a Deputy Director of Institute of Environment Science, and the State Education Commission of Geography textbook editor. He devoted his life to higher education. He is one of the founders of environmental sciences at Nanjing University. He has achieved significant amount of scientific research and has trained a large number of top talents in the field of natural geography and environmental science. Among his achievements, his work was published in the long-term scientific research "soil science foundation and soil geography" as well as other textbooks and "Principles of Geography" plus lots of other translations that also published in the geography and environmental science magazines, "A preliminary study of saline soil in the ChaiDaMu Basin" and 37 other papers. From 1974 to 1988, he had won many national and ministerial-level scientific and technological progress awards. These contributions were recorded in the "Ceremony of Contemporary Chinese Science and Technology Achievements of the People's Republic of China on the 40th Anniversary of the Founding of People's Republic of China." By the State Environmental Protection Agency 6-5 national environmental science and technology research awards, and was reworded as Nanjing Environmental Protection highest horned individual. He passed away on January 14, 2018, at the age of 89. Throughout his life, he dedicated to be honest, hardworking and kind, humorous and optimistic, approachable, simple and innocent. In the treatment of work and career, he advocates academic, pursuing of excellence, caring for his students, diligent and conscientious. He also loved his family. After he retired, he devoted most of his energy and time to his grandchildren.
Yumin Liu is survived by his loving wife Weiyun Yan, his sons Yonggang, Yongning, Yongbin, his grandsons and granddaughter Kevin, Brandon, Andy, Samuel, Mathew, Derrick, Casey and Brian. Although he left us in a hurry, his spirit of being honest and persistent will inspire us forever.
